Voices of the Land began as a way to listen more closely to the stories, relationships, and lived experiences that shape Mississauga, but aren’t always recorded.
Developed by Heritage Mississauga with support from the Ontario Trillium Foundation, the project brings together voices from the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, as well as Indigenous residents living in the city today.
I led the interviews and shaped the narratives across the project, from the initial conversations through to the final articles and films.
Over time, I conducted more than 18 long-form interviews, working closely with each storyteller to ensure their voice, intent, and meaning remained intact.
The work is grounded in listening.
Each conversation requires a different kind of attention. Some people speak in clear, direct reflections. Others move through longer, more layered stories. My role is to meet that rhythm, and to shape the material without overriding it.
Storytellers are part of the process throughout. They review and approve their articles before publication, so what is shared remains theirs.
Each conversation unfolds differently.
Some are direct and reflective. Others take time, circling around memory, place, and experience before settling into something clearer.
The work creates space for stories that haven’t always been heard, while also preserving knowledge that might otherwise be lost. It builds understanding through individual voices and lived experience.
At times, the interviews become something more personal. A pause. A shift. A moment where someone hears their own story differently as they tell it.
This work includes oral history interviews, written narrative articles, and short documentary films, along with digital storytelling across web and social platforms.
These stories reflect lived experiences, relationships to land, and ways of understanding identity.
Each is shaped by the storyteller’s voice, grounded in connection to place.
